The St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary was formally established by the Congregation for the Oriental Churches through its letter dated April 26, l962 and it was formally inaugurated and began functioning on July 3, l962. It was the fulfillment of a long-cherished desire and the realization of the great efforts of the visionaries of the Syro-Malabar Church to have the formation of her candidates to priesthood in the authentic tradition of this Apostolic Church. The painstaking efforts of Rev. Dr. Placid Podipara CMI, Archbishop Mar Mathew Kavukatt, Mar Joseph Cardinal Parekkattil and the special interest of Eugene Cardinal Tisserant, the then Prefect of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches, were instrumental in the erection of this Seminary. It is primarily intended for the education and formation of the seminarians of the Syro-Malabar dioceses. It is also open to the students of Syro-Malankara and Latin dioceses and of religious congregations. The Seminary is subject to the authority and control of the Syro-Malabar Bishops’ Synod, which exercises its authority through a specially elected Synodal Commission of Bishops.








It will be nothing of exaggeration or undervalued self-estimation to call the St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary a twin-born child with the second Vatican Council. As the land-marking Council had its glorious flag-off on the 11th of October 1962, the Seminary for the Oriental Churches in India had its first seminarian to enter into this glorious home of the Syro-Malabar Church on the 31st of May, 1962. It was a dream fulfilled and one yet to achieve. It was a task realized and yet to thrive hard. It was a responsibility handed down and yet to be accomplished. It was the glorious moment of entrusting the great mission of forming the future priests of the Church after the heart of Jesus the Pastor and Guru, the forerunner and role-model for all the generations.



The Seminary aims at providing a fully integrated priestly formation to the candidates of the Syro- Malabar eparchies, members of institutes of consecrated life and candidates of other Churches sui iuris taking into account the human, spiritual, intellectual, pastoral and missionary dimensions of priestly life.Imparting Philosophical and Theological knowledge that will accentuate the study of the tradition and heritage of the Church of St. Thomas Christians and of the other Eastern Churches with due regard to the religious and cultural heritage of India.
